After a young prostitute is found murdered, the Sparta police department must navigate the seedy world of prostitution and drugs to find her killer. Sheriff Gillespie is challenged by his old friend and fellow lawman, Sheriff Dunaway, who comes to Sparta to investigate the murder after the victim is identified as his daughter. As they work together to solve the case, tensions rise between the two sheriffs. Meanwhile, Officer Sweet's troubled brother, W.J., arrives in town looking for a place to stay. Sweet takes him in, but soon learns that W.J. is involved in criminal activity and must decide where his loyalties lie. Based on the 1967 Oscar-winning film of the same name, In the Heat of the Night explores the complexities of race, crime, and relationships in a small southern town.
