The show In Plain Sight follows Mary Shannon, a U.S. Federal Marshal working for the Witness Protection Program (WITSEC) living in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In season 1 episode 22, titled "Red Hot Murder," Mary is assigned to protect the key witness in a high-profile extortion case, Anita Sanchez. Anita's testimony is crucial to the prosecution's case against the notorious drug lord, Hector Zepeda.
Anita is a Cuban immigrant who has been living in the United States for several years. She had been working as a waitress in a local restaurant, but when she discovered that her boss was using the business as a front for illegal activities, she approached the authorities with the information. Soon after, she began receiving threatening phone calls and her boss's henchmen made an attempt on her life. That's when she was placed under the WITSEC program and brought to Albuquerque to await the trial.
While Mary initially considers Anita to be a "low-risk" witness, she soon realizes that the danger level is much higher than she had anticipated. Two of Hector Zepeda's men manage to track down Anita's location and break into her safe house in the middle of the night. Mary and her partner, Marshall Mann, are able to neutralize the attackers, but the incident leaves Mary shaken. She realizes that she needs to up the ante on Anita's protection and decides to move her to a more secure location.
To make matters more complicated, Mary's troubled sister, Brandi, unexpectedly shows up at her doorstep. Brandi is struggling with drug addiction and has been causing her family a lot of stress. Mary is torn between her duty towards Anita and her desire to help her sister. She decides to take a few hours off from work to spend time with Brandi, hoping to convince her to seek treatment.
Meanwhile, the trial against Hector Zepeda is drawing near, and the prosecution team is desperate to get Anita's testimony. They offer her a deal to reduce her sentence if she agrees to testify in court. However, Anita is hesitant and fearful for her safety. Mary tries to convince her that the only way to put Hector Zepeda behind bars is to testify, but Anita remains unconvinced.
As the trial date approaches, Mary realizes that someone within the WITSEC program may be leaking information to Hector Zepeda's men. She suspects that the program's director, who has been acting oddly, may be involved. Mary and Marshall investigate the director's activities and uncover a shocking twist that puts Anita's life in even greater danger.
