In Impulse season 1 episode 1 titled "Pilot," the audience is introduced to a rebellious teenager named Henrietta "Henry" Coles. Henry moves to a new town with her mother and stepfather, struggling to adapt to her new surroundings and the traditional expectations from her parents. As a result of her rebellious behaviors, Henry is forced to attend an improvised party thrown at a cornfield.
While at the party, Henry is sexually assaulted, and in the midst of the attack, she suddenly discovers she has the ability to teleport. Confused and frightened by her newfound power, Henry tries to come to terms with what happened to her, while also trying to understand her abilities.
As the episode progresses, events culminate in a car accident that forces Henry to teleport for the first time accurately. The crash leaves her mother in a coma, and her stepfather assumes that Henry caused the crash while she was driving under the influence.
