Towering Alan is the sixth episode of the first season of I'm Alan Partridge. The episode features Alan's attempts to organize a charity concert to raise money for a lighthouse that is in danger of being shut down. The lighthouse was the setting for Alan's famous pitch for a TV series in which he would play a zookeeper trapped in a lighthouse with a talking gorilla.
Alan is enthusiastic about the concert and his role as organizer, but encounters a number of obstacles. One of the acts he has booked, Jet from Gloucester, pulls out due to a scheduling conflict. Alan also struggles to find someone to host the event, but eventually settles on a local radio DJ named Dave Clifton.
As the day of the concert approaches, Alan becomes increasingly nervous. He is worried about the potential for disaster, particularly after a phone call from a disgruntled listener who tells him that the lighthouse is haunted. Alan's nerves are not helped by the fact that the concert is being held during an electrical storm, which he believes is a bad omen.
Despite these setbacks, the concert is a success. Dave Clifton's hosting is well received, and the acts that perform, including a local Elvis impersonator, are warmly received by the audience. The highlight of the concert, however, is Alan's own performance. He takes to the stage to perform a song called "Goldfinger", which he has rewritten with lyrics about the lighthouse. The song is a hit with the crowd, and Alan leaves the stage to rapturous applause.
In the aftermath of the concert, Alan is thrilled with the success of the event. He is particularly pleased with the fact that the lighthouse will now receive enough funding to stay open. However, he is also somewhat disappointed that the charity event has not helped him to revive his career. He realizes that he is still stuck in a dead-end job as a local radio host, and that his dreams of TV stardom are unlikely to be realized.
Towering Alan is a comic masterpiece of a show that offers a hilarious and often poignant insight into the life and dreams of a washed-up TV host. Alan is a complex and endearing character who is both tragic and funny in equal measure. The episode is filled with memorable moments, from Alan's disastrous attempts to book acts for the concert, to his intense performance of "Goldfinger". It is a testament to the show's creators that they have managed to create such a vivid and compelling character in Alan Partridge, and that they have given him such a rich and entertaining world to inhabit.
