I shouldn't be Alive is a survival television series that documents true stories of people who've been stranded in harsh and unforgiving environments. This show reenacts the events of those survivors’ struggle and triumph over death. Shark Survivor, the first episode of season one, chronicles the life of three friends who went for a weekend diving trip off the coast of Florida.
Dan, Eric, and Abe, all experienced divers, had made up their minds to go shark fishing after their dive. They took their boat and headed north to look for a good spot. Soon they reached a place they believed to be excellent, a deep channel with a sharp rocky drop-off. The men anchored the boat and began casting their lines. But after an hour of trying and not getting a single bite they decided to try a different spot.
As they headed back south, something diverged the boat with a tremendous force, throwing everyone overboard. The three men surfaced to find themselves being attacked by a swarm of Bull sharks. A creature with immense muscle power and one of the most powerful jaw muscles of any creature on Earth. Their boat was sinking, and their screams were useless; they were being circled by an impending disaster.
Dan, the leader and the most experienced diver among them, quickly assessed the situation. When he realized their predicament, he instructed his friends to swim downward, and then parted ways with Abe and Eric; he'd draw the sharks away while the other two could make their way back to the boat.
From here on, the episode shows Dan's unrelenting endeavor to survive against all the odds. He managed to outsmart the sharks many times with his swimming and diving skills and escaped from their jaws with immense athleticism and strong willpower. Every time Dan tried to return to the boat, the sharks would sense him and attack.
Eric and Abe, on their part, did their best to save Dan. Abe tried to jump into the water with a spear in his hand to fight off the sharks, but Dan reminded him not to risk his life ending soon. They could be rescued only if they held their ground and kept an eye out for any passing boats.
The episode is suspenseful and engaging, with the reenactment of the events being well made and thrilling to watch. Throughout the show, the audience can feel the pressure and vulnerability of the survivors and empathizes with them.
The Shark Survivor episode also highlights the physical and psychological impact that a survivor's exposure to extreme conditions can have. The prolonged episodes of fear and struggle can take a toll on their physical and mental health, with some even questioning the meaning of life itself.
The show concludes with the rescue of the three friends after nearly 20 hours by an unassuming fisherman, who turned out to be their savior. Their story is a testament to the human instinct to survive under any circumstances. Shark Survivor is an excellent episode that sets the tone for the rest of the series.
