Lucy and Ricky have been planning their long overdue European vacation for months, but as their departure date draws near, Lucy becomes increasingly anxious about leaving Little Ricky behind with his grandparents. Adding to her apprehension is the fact that Little Ricky seems to be feeling neglected in the midst of all the pre-trip preparations, and has developed a case of the hiccups that won't go away. To ease her guilt and concerns, Lucy throws Little Ricky a goodbye party with all his friends from the neighborhood, complete with games, cake and even a piñata. The festivity leaves everyone in good spirits but Lucy's anxiety returns the moment she realizes that their flight to Europe leaves early the next morning, before Little Ricky wakes up.
As the Ricardos prepare for their trip, they receive a series of surprise visits from friends and acquaintances, who all have farewell gifts and advice to share. Fred and Ethel arrive with a large package that turns out to be a brand new color television set, which they got for the Ricardos so they can keep up with what's happening back home. Little does Lucy know that this gift comes with a catch, as Fred and Ethel secretly plan on babysitting the TV while Lucy and Ricky are away, and in the process, get themselves into a sticky situation.
Meanwhile, Lucy becomes increasingly worried about the trip, imagining all sorts of things that could go wrong on the airplane or in a foreign country. Ricky tries to reassure her by reminding her of all the fun they will have and all the cultural experiences they will gain, but Lucy remains unconvinced. In an effort to take her mind off her worries, Ricky convinces her to join him and their travel agent, Mr. Livermore, for a pre-trip dinner at their favorite restaurant. However, the dinner turns into a comedic disaster when Lucy overhears Mr. Livermore telling the other diners that he had to book them in a third-class cabin to save money, which turns out to be a lie.
As they return home from the dinner, Lucy receives a telegram from Little Ricky's doctor, informing her that he has a mild case of the measles and needs to stay in bed for the next few days. Lucy panics and tries to cancel the trip, but Ricky insists that they go ahead as planned, assuring her that Little Ricky will be well taken care of. Lucy reluctantly agrees, but cannot shake the feeling that something terrible will happen if she leaves Little Ricky behind.
As they pack their suitcases and prepare to leave, Lucy and Ricky discover that the TV set that Fred and Ethel gave them has been accidentally locked inside a special cabinet with no way of getting it out. Ethel, feeling guilty, hires a locksmith to open the cabinet, but when they finally do, they discover that the TV has been badly damaged. In a desperate attempt to make things right, Fred and Ethel decide to buy an identical TV set to replace the broken one, but things go awry when they accidentally mix up their delivery with that of a neighbor who has ordered a live chicken.
With only minutes left before their flight, Lucy and Ricky struggle to get everything in order and last minute mishaps abound, including the discovery of Little Ricky's missing toy airplane. But, in the end, the Ricardos manage to make it to the airport just in time, with everyone and everything in tow. As they board the plane, Lucy is still worried about her son, but as they take off and soar into the sky, she realizes that her worries have been replaced by the sense of adventure and excitement that comes with traveling to new and exciting places.
