In I Hear Your Voice season 1 episode 2, we get a further glimpse into the life of Jang Hye Sung, a public defender, her everyday banter with her best friend Park Soo Ha, and her fight for justice. Soo Ha, a high school boy who possesses the ability to hear people's thoughts, decides to attend Hye Sung's hearing in court to hear her thoughts. He saves Hye Sung from a knife-wielding perpetrator, thereby revealing his secret to her.
Meanwhile, Hye Sung handles the case of a woman, Jo Yeon Hui, who's been accused of murdering her husband. Yeon Hui denies all charges, and her two children support her claim of innocence. The initial evidence seems to favor Yeon Hui as well. However, Hye Sung's opinion changes after meeting the daughter of the deceased who claims that her mother was subjected to domestic violence.
The prosecutor in the case is Seo Do Yeon, a rival of Hye Sung's. Do Yeon is taunted by her superiors to get a conviction, and she fervently works towards that objective. It is revealed that a family feud between Yeon Hui's and the deceased's families may have been a contributing factor to the latter's death. Soo Ha helps Hye Sung in the case, and it becomes clear that he seeks revenge against the deceased's brother who'd orchestrated the death.
In an attempt to help Yeon Hui, Soo Ha steals a medical report which reveals that Yeon Hui was indeed a victim of domestic violence. However, the report isn't enough, and Hye Sung must now come up with a plausible explanation for what transpired on the day of the deceased's death. Hye Song eventually uncovers the truth, and Yeon Hui is acquitted of all charges.
However, things do not go well for Do Yeon, who finds out that her employer did not appreciate her working towards a conviction at any cost. Do Yeon is subsequently demoted, and her boss apologizes to Hye Sung for her behavior in court.
As the episode concludes, Hye Sung contemplates why Soo Ha has been following her around and helping her. She decides to sit down with him and hear him out, and Soo Ha reveals his ability to read thoughts. He swears to protect her from any wrongdoing in the future.
