The story of I Cannot Hug You revolves around a popular actress named Li Shi Ya, portrayed by Zhang Yu Xi, and a vampire named Zhang Shi Hao, played by Xing Zhao Lin. Shi Ya suffers from a rare medical condition where she cannot be touched by anyone, as it causes her to break out in hives. She lives a life of loneliness, away from people and relationships. Zhang Shi Hao, on the other hand, is a vampire who has been alive for many years and has no intention of living among humans.

Despite their completely opposite backgrounds, the two characters eventually come together in the most unusual circumstances. Shi Ya opens a coffee shop, which draws the attention of Shi Hao, who aims to buy the shop since it is located on a place he considers important. As Shi Hao enters the coffee shop, he finds Shi Ya's scent irresistible, and from that moment on, he becomes obsessed with her. However, because Shi Ya cannot be touched, Shi Hao has to figure out how to approach her without causing any harm.

As the story progresses, Shi Hao and Shi Ya become more involved in each other's lives, with Shi Hao helping Shi Ya deal with her medical condition and overcome her fears. They start to develop feelings for each other, but their relationship is complicated, as Shi Hao tries to keep his true identity a secret, and Shi Ya struggles with letting go of her fears.
