In the second episode of Hunting Nazi Treasure season 1, titled "Goering's Greed," the treasure-hunting team delve into the incredible stories of Herman Goering's inexhaustible appetite for priceless art and cultural treasures.
The episode opens with a brief history of Goering, once one of Hitler's most trusted confidantes, who rose to be the second-most powerful man in Nazi Germany. Goering was entrusted with the control of entire countries, as well as being responsible for the theft of millions of priceless artefacts.
The team sets out to investigate the legendary hoard of priceless art, known as the 'Hermann Goering Collection', said to include some of the greatest masterpieces of all time. They travel across Europe, retracing Goering's footsteps over 70 years ago at the onset of WWII, and seeking to uncover the secrets of his supposedly immense collection.
One of the highlights of the episode is when the team visit the magnificent Wewelsburg Castle, which had been turned into a museum by the Third Reich. They explore the hidden chambers where the Nazis stored their loot, and tour the castle's underground vaults. Here, they discover some amazing treasures that were intended for display in a museum of Goering's own design, planned for Munich.
Meanwhile, the team also tracks down some of the more notorious works in Goering's hoard that have yet to see the light of day, including one of the world's most famous missing masterpieces, which also happens to be a personal favourite of Adolf Hitler's. And in France, they uncover a stash of resistance fighters' artefacts that were being smuggled into Switzerland, but which were ultimately seized by the Nazis and were intended for display in Goering's 'super museum'.
Throughout the episode, the team engages with experts, historians and other treasure hunters, who all have their own unique insights into Goering's life and crimes. They also explore some of the most notorious personalities associated with Goering, including his British art dealer, Walter Andreas Hofer, who is infamous for his role in dealing with Goering on behalf of the Allied forces.
Overall, "Goering's Greed" is a riveting and insightful episode that not only sheds light on one of the most fascinating and dark periods of human history, but it also illuminates some of the most fascinating, and often unknown stories about one of the most infamous art collections of all time.
