In the Belly of the Whale is the first episode of the Amazon Prime Video original series, Hunters. The show is set in New York City during the 1970s and follows a group of Nazi hunters who have come together to track down high-ranking Nazi officials who have managed to escape justice by relocating to the United States.
The episode begins with flashbacks to the concentration camps where many of the hunters lost their families and loved ones. We are introduced to Jonah Heidelbaum, a young man who works in a comic book store and lives with his grandmother, Ruth. Jonah's life changes when he discovers that his grandmother has been brutally murdered in her apartment.
As the police begin to investigate the case, Jonah starts to uncover clues that suggest there is more to his grandmother's murder than meets the eye. He discovers a notebook hidden in her apartment that contains a list of names and addresses. Jonah quickly realizes that his grandmother was a part of the group of Nazi hunters and that the list she left behind contains information about their targets.
Jonah soon meets Meyer Offerman, a wealthy businessman and Holocaust survivor who leads the group of hunters. Meyer tells Jonah that his grandmother was an important member of their team and that she was killed because of her involvement in their mission. He asks Jonah to join them in their quest to track down and kill the remaining high-ranking Nazis who have evaded justice.
Jonah is reluctant to join at first, but as he digs deeper into his grandmother's past and learns about the atrocities committed by the Nazis, he realizes that he needs to take up the cause. Along the way, he meets the other members of the team, including Sister Harriet, a former nun with a dark past, and Lonny Flash, a black Vietnam War veteran who is instrumental in helping the team track down their targets.
As the team continues to investigate and hunt down the Nazis on their list, they encounter obstacles and danger at every turn. They must navigate through corrupt politicians and law enforcement officials, as well as the Nazis themselves, who will stop at nothing to protect their identities.
In the Belly of the Whale sets the stage for an intense and gripping series that explores the aftermath of the Holocaust and the lengths that survivors will go to seek justice. With its talented cast and well-written script, Hunters is a must-watch for anyone interested in historical dramas with a twist of action and suspense.
