Hudson & Rex season 3 episode 1, called "Origin Story," tells the backstory of how Detective Charlie Hudson and his loyal canine companion Rex first came to meet each other.
Set in the city of St. John's, Newfoundland, the episode begins with a flashback to several years ago when Hudson was still a new officer on the force. He's a bit of a loner, struggling to find his place in the department and feeling like he's not making much of a difference.
One day, during a routine patrol, Hudson comes across a stray dog wandering through an alley. The dog is scrappy and dirty-looking, but there's something about him that catches Hudson's attention. Before he knows it, the dog has followed him back to the precinct, where he proceeds to charm everyone he meets - except for Hudson's partner, who's not a fan of dogs.
But Hudson has a soft spot for the dog, and he ends up taking him home with him that night. He's not quite sure what to do with him - he's never had a pet before - but he's determined to take care of him and give him a better life.
Over the next few weeks, Hudson and the dog start to form a bond. Hudson learns that the dog is incredibly intelligent and has a nose for sniffing out trouble. Together, they start going out on patrols, with the dog following Hudson's lead and helping him solve crimes.
As time goes on, Hudson realizes that he's not the only one who's been changed by the dog. The whole precinct is starting to see things differently, and they're all a bit more compassionate and kind because of him.
But everything changes when the dog saves Hudson's life during a shootout. In the chaos of the moment, the dog gets hit by a bullet and is rushed to the vet's office. Hudson is beside himself with worry, and he realizes that he can't imagine his life without the dog.
Thankfully, the dog pulls through, but it's a close call. Hudson realizes that he needs to make a decision: he can either keep the dog and take care of him for the rest of his life, or he can try and find him a better home where he can be cared for properly. It's a tough choice, but in the end, Hudson decides to keep the dog and make him his partner.
Fast forward to the present day, and Hudson and Rex are now a well-established crime-fighting duo. They're still solving cases together, but their partnership has blossomed into something much deeper than that. They're best friends, soulmates, and partners in every sense of the word.
As the episode ends, Hudson reflects on the journey that he and Rex have been on together. He's thankful for the dog's unwavering loyalty and devotion, and he knows that he wouldn't be the same person without him. As they prepare for their next case, Hudson and Rex share a moment of quiet camaraderie, knowing that they're in this together for the long haul.
