Last Time in New York is the third episode of the ninth and final season of How I Met Your Mother. The episode revolves around Barney and Robin's parents, who all come to New York City for their wedding. Although Robin is excited to see her mother, she is nervous about her father's arrival, as they have never had a close relationship in the past.
Meanwhile, Ted and Lily are on a mission to find the perfect wedding gift for Barney and Robin. They try out various ideas including an expensive espresso machine and a custom-made painting before finally settling on a unique gift that both the bride and groom will appreciate.
As the episode progresses, tensions rise between Robin and her father, which leads to a heart-to-heart conversation between the two. The conversation forces Robin to confront her unresolved feelings towards her father and come to terms with their strained relationship.
On the other hand, Barney and his father have a wild night out in the city, which brings them closer together. Barney's father shares some stories from his past, which help Barney understand his own father better.
Meanwhile, Marshall is struggling with being away from his wife and son, who are on a road trip to the wedding. He confides in his old college friend Daphne, who teaches him that being away from his family is hard, but it's also an opportunity to grow.
In the end, everyone comes together for a rooftop toast to the bride and groom, reflecting on how far they've all come. The episode ends with a touching moment between Robin and her father, signaling the possibility of a brighter future for their relationship.
