Ted and Barney decide to go out to the bar to find Ted's "perfect match." While attempting to hit on a woman, Ted runs into Trudy, a former girlfriend who he never fully got over. Trudy reveals that she is no longer with her long-time partner and is now interested in rekindling things with Ted. However, Ted is hesitant to jump back into a relationship with her due to their history.
Meanwhile, Marshall and Lily are trying to come up with a new idea for their couple's game night. After struggling to think of a new game, they decide to play an old game that Marshall's family often played: Old King Clancy. The game is originally a Canadian tradition that Marshall's family altered into a drinking game.
As they play the game, tensions rise as Lily becomes fiercely competitive and insulting towards Marshall. Marshall becomes upset and Lily reveals that she has never won a game night and feels that it is her turn to be the "Old King Clancy." The game ends with Lily and Marshall making up and agreeing to play fair in the future.
Back at the bar, Ted is still struggling with whether or not to pursue things with Trudy. Barney makes a bet with Ted that Trudy still has feelings for him and says that he can prove it. Through a series of schemes, Barney is able to prove his bet true and Ted agrees to give things with Trudy another chance.
The episode ends with Marshall and Lily playing Old King Clancy one final time, with Lily finally winning the game. They celebrate their victory with a kiss, and the camera pans outside to show snow beginning to fall on New York City.
Overall, "Old King Clancy" is a classic episode of How I Met Your Mother that combines comedy with a poignant exploration of relationships and friendship. The game night storyline provides a relatable and funny look at the trials of couple's game nights, while Ted's storyline highlights the difficulties of figuring out whether or not to give an old flame another chance.
