In season 5, episode 6 of House, titled "Joy," the team treats a well-known journalist named Nick Greenwald (played by Jay Karnes). While filming a segment for his show, Nick collapses on camera and is rushed to Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. Initially, House is not interested in taking on Nick's case, but when he learns that Nick is a fan of his and has dedicated his show to exploring medical mysteries, he agrees.
Meanwhile, Foreman takes on a case of a young woman named Emily (played by Bailee Madison) who has been hospitalized multiple times for unexplained fainting and seizures. Foreman discovers that Emily's mother has Munchausen by proxy, a mental illness in which a caregiver fabricates or induces illness in another person for attention. Emily's mother insists that Emily is sick, but Foreman isn't convinced.
House's team gets to work on Nick's case, but they're at a loss. They've ruled out all the common causes of his symptoms, but they can't figure out what else could be wrong with him. House is convinced that Nick's illness is related to his work as a journalist, so the team starts looking into his recent assignments. They discover that Nick has been investigating a local waste management plant and that he may have been exposed to toxic chemicals.
As they continue to investigate, House becomes more and more interested in Nick's case. He's impressed with Nick's dedication to medical mysteries and his ability to get people interested in obscure diseases. However, when Nick's condition takes a turn for the worse, House realizes that he may have missed something important.
Meanwhile, Foreman is struggling to convince Emily's mother that her daughter isn't sick. He brings in other doctors to back up his diagnosis, but Emily's mother is still convinced that something is wrong with her daughter. Foreman starts to feel like he's fighting a losing battle, but he's determined to help Emily.
In the end, both cases are solved. House and the team discover that Nick's illness was caused by exposure to a toxic chemical, and they're able to treat him successfully. Emily's mother is finally convinced that her daughter isn't sick, and Emily is released from the hospital.
The episode concludes with House once again impressed by Nick's dedication to medical mysteries. He's inspired to take on more cases that challenge him and push him to his limits. The episode ends on a hopeful note, with House excited about what the future holds.
