In the House season 5 episode 10 titled Let Them Eat Cake, Dr. Gregory House is back to his usual antics, although this time he's torn: does he want to celebrate his birthday alone or have a party with his colleagues?
Not one for sentimental occasions, House is conflicted as he tries to decide whether or not to attend the hospital's Christmas party. However, his hand is forced when a patient's illness leaves him with a rare symptom that only the entire team can diagnose.
The case is that of a young patient who has had strange symptoms his entire life, but his condition now seems to be getting worse. As the team tries to determine the cause of his worsening condition, they come across several potential diagnoses, but none of them seem to fit all of the symptoms.
As the team struggles to find a diagnosis, House, inspired by the bakery gift he received from Cuddy, considers the possibility that the patient has been poisoned--leading him and his team down a path of investigation towards the young boy's family members and friends.
Meanwhile, Dr. Amber Volakis, House's new recruit, can't help but feel that she's being ignored by the rest of the team, sparking tensions in the already complex relationships between the doctors.
As the case progresses, House's birthday celebration takes a backseat to the mystery at hand. But with the pressure mounting and the patient's life on the line, will the team be able to find a diagnosis before it's too late?
Ultimately, Let Them Eat Cake is a classic episode of House. It features plenty of witty banter between the doctors and showcases their abilities as a team. But it also offers something new as viewers are given a glimpse into the personal life of the famously reclusive Dr. House.
