In this episode of Hot Ones, comedian and actor Pete Holmes joins host Sean Evans for a spicy conversation over a plate of increasingly hot wings. Holmes is no stranger to the show, having previously appeared on season four, but this time he brings a new twist to the format: improv.
As they dig into the first wing coated in a mild sauce, Holmes discusses his experience with improv comedy and how it helped him find his voice on stage. The sauce is nothing too crazy, but Holmes still manages to make some hilarious one-liners that set the tone for the rest of the episode.
As they move on to the second wing, things start to heat up both in terms of the spice level and in the conversation. Holmes talks about his recent divorce and how it has impacted his life and comedy. Despite the heavy topic, the two manage to keep the mood light and continue to crack jokes.
The third wing brings a sauce that is truly spicy, causing both Holmes and Evans to sweat and take deep breaths. But the conversation never falters, as they talk about Holmes' podcast You Made It Weird and his love for comedy and how it can be a form of therapy.
As they reach the halfway point, the wings continue to get hotter and the conversation continues to flow. Holmes shares stories about his time working on the TV show Crashing and his upcoming HBO special Dirty Clean.
By the time they reach the last wing, covered in the extremely spicy Beyond Insanity sauce, Holmes is full-fledged improvising, taking on different characters and incorporating the heat into his bits. It's a hilarious and impressive sight to see him dodge the heat and still make the audience laugh.
Throughout the episode, Holmes and Evans have a great dynamic, playing off of each other's jokes and keeping the conversation going despite the intensity of the wings. And by the end, viewers will be left with not only a greater appreciation for the art of improv, but also a desire to try some of the spicy sauces for themselves (with a glass of milk nearby, of course).
