Ep 1. Despicable Me 1 & 2 - Honest Trailers

  • June 27, 2017

In the premiere episode of season 9 for the popular web series "Honest Trailers," the focus is on Illumination Entertainment's "Despicable Me" franchise. The episode takes a hilarious, yet critical, approach to examining the first two films in the series.

The episode begins with the disclaimer that the films were made to sell merchandise, and the trailers didn't need to show anything beyond the cute, yellow Minions. The narrator then goes over the plot points of the first film, noting that it's essentially a rip-off of "The Incredibles" with a more villainous protagonist. The narrator also pokes fun at the film's overreliance on minions, with every scene featuring the yellow creatures, or at least one of their many, many, variations.

The trailer continues by highlighting the film's inconsistencies and plot holes, such as the lack of security at the villain's base and the sudden turn from villainy to paternal love on Gru's part. The narrator also takes a dig at the film's unrealistic portrayal of adoption, with the children being treated more like minions than actual humans.

Moving on to the second film, the narrator notes the recycled plot of the first film, with Gru now going up against another villain while also dealing with his newfound paternal responsibilities. The narrator also makes note of the film's forced romance subplot, as well as the many celebrity cameos that do little outside of distracting from the plot.

The episode also spends time critiquing the film's use of fart jokes, gross-out humor, and tired pop-culture references. The narrator notes that the minions are now even more prevalent in the sequel, taking over the entire marketing campaign (and any semblance of a coherent plot).

Overall, the episode gives a blunt and unapologetic opinion of the "Despicable Me" franchise. The trailer may not be for diehard fans of the series (or the minions), but for those looking to see the films' flaws highlighted in a humorous way, this episode will not disappoint.
