Ep 74. Honest Trailers - Maleficent

  • November 11, 2014

In season 1 episode 74 of Honest Trailers, we take a closer look at Disney's 2014 live-action film, Maleficent. The movie is a retelling of the classic Sleeping Beauty tale from the perspective of the infamous villain, Maleficent. The trailer immediately pokes fun at the film's attempt to make the audience feel sympathy for the character, calling her a "devilishly hot" fairy who's pissed off at the world for losing her wings.

The narrator goes on to point out the film's reliance on CGI, with the majority of the characters being either completely computer-generated or heavily edited. Angelina Jolie's performance as Maleficent is also criticized as being too over-the-top and melodramatic, with many of her lines being ridiculous and cringe-worthy.

The trailer also makes fun of the film's attempts to be dark and edgy, with its dark color palette and gritty fight scenes. The narrator points out that, despite its attempts, the movie still manages to be rated PG, and therefore can't really go as dark as it wants to. The movie's pacing is also criticized, with scenes dragging on for too long and nothing really happening.

Overall, the Honest Trailer for Maleficent is a hilarious take on a movie that took itself way too seriously. The narrator even points out the fact that the film has no real reason for existing, other than to cash in on the Disney brand. Despite all of its faults, the trailer admits that Maleficent is still an enjoyable movie, albeit for all the wrong reasons.
