Ep 131. Honest Trailers - The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

  • March 15, 2016

In this episode of Honest Trailers, the team takes a satirical and humorous look at the final installment of the Hunger Games franchise, Mockingjay Part 2. The trailer begins with a tongue-in-cheek reference to the movie's tagline "the revolution is about all of us" by stating that "the revolution is about a girl who likes to scream a lot." The narrator then proceeds to poke fun at the bleak, dystopian world of Panem, and the fact that the entire series revolves around kids killing each other for sport.

The trailer also takes aim at the convoluted plot of Mockingjay Part 2, noting that it's basically just a bunch of characters wandering through the ruins of a war-torn city trying to find people. There are several humorous references to the film's abundance of "grimaces," with shots of various characters staring intensely and gritting their teeth.

The trailer also highlights the somewhat absurd nature of the action sequences in the film, with characters flying through the air and dodging gunfire like they're in a superhero movie rather than a dystopian drama. There are references to some of the more ridiculous moments in the film, like the "mutts" (genetically-engineered monsters) that chase the characters through the sewers, and the giant oil slick that inexplicably explodes when a bullet is fired at it.

The Honest Trailers team also has some fun with the film's love triangle, noting that it's "never been less romantic or more distracting." There are several clips of the characters kissing and embracing set to cheesy romantic music, juxtaposed with shots of the film's more intense action sequences.

As the trailer comes to a close, the narrator notes that despite its flaws, Mockingjay Part 2 "still delivers on what fans of the franchise have come to expect: Jennifer Lawrence looking fierce and giving zero f***s." Overall, the episode is a hilarious take on the final installment of the Hunger Games franchise, poking fun at everything from the film's convoluted plot to its gratuitous use of slow-motion shots.
