Ep 127. Honest Trailers - Spectre

  • February 2, 2016

Honest Trailers is a popular web series on YouTube that satirizes popular movies and TV shows in a comedic manner. In season 1 episode 127, the Honest Trailers team takes on the James Bond movie Spectre.

The episode kicks off with a brief intro, poking fun at the film's title font before diving into the meat of the trailer. The narrator jumps right into the plot, describing it as "a two-and-a-half hour slog through Bond's most existential crisis yet." From there, the trailer cuts together clips from the movie with witty commentary from the Honest Trailers team.

One of the main themes of the episode is the movie's convoluted plot. The team spends a lot of time trying to explain all of the different factions and characters who pop up throughout the story. At one point, they joke that Spectre has "more double crosses than a cross-eyed chameleon playing hopscotch." They also point out that Bond spends a large portion of the movie just wandering around, trying to figure out what's going on.

Another area that comes under fire is the movie's attempts at character development. The Honest Trailers team has fun with the fact that Bond seems to learn absolutely nothing over the course of the entire movie. They also poke fun at the relationship between Bond and his love interest, calling it "the most undercooked romance this side of a microwave burrito."

Of course, it wouldn't be a James Bond movie without some action sequences, and the trailer doesn't disappoint in that regard. The team has a lot of fun with the film's various set pieces, ranging from an airplane fight to a car chase through the streets of Rome. They also call out some of the more implausible moments in the action scenes, such as Bond's ability to control a car with his watch or the fact that he's apparently a master of helicopter piloting.

As always, the Honest Trailers team also takes some shots at the movie's marketing campaign and overall production value. They poke fun at the decision to release the movie's theme song as a standalone single, as well as the fact that the film was apparently edited right up until its premiere. They also call attention to some of the film's more egregious product placements, including one for a certain luxury car company that's practically a staple of the Bond franchise.

In general, the episode is a fun and lighthearted take on one of the more divisive James Bond movies. The Honest Trailers team clearly has a lot of affection for the character and series as a whole, but they're not afraid to point out the flaws and inconsistencies that can sometimes creep in. If you're a fan of either James Bond or comedic movie analysis, this episode is definitely worth checking out.
