Ep 104. Honest Trailers - Super Mario Bros.

  • July 21, 2015

In this episode of Honest Trailers, the team takes on the classic video game turned movie adaptation Super Mario Bros. The episode opens with a humorous reminder that this movie is not a documentary and that none of it actually happened.

From there, the team dives into the plot of the movie which they describe as a convoluted mess. They make fun of the fact that they had to explain the backstory of the Super Mario universe in the opening scene and that they had to explain it twice since the first time was just too confusing.

Throughout the episode, there are plenty of jokes about the strange characters and creatures that appear in the movie. They make fun of the decision to give Yoshi a lizard-like appearance and the fact that Bowser is basically just a man in a suit. They also poke fun at the clunky special effects and the odd decision to make all the dinosaurs talk like Brooklynites.

The team spends a lot of time pointing out the many plot holes in the movie and questioning the logic behind some of the decisions made by the filmmakers. They jokingly suggest that the script may have been written by someone who had never even played the video game.

One of the highlights of the episode is the team's commentary on the performance of the actors. They mock the overacting of the characters and make fun of the awkward romantic subplot between Mario and Princess Daisy. They even compare the movie's depiction of Mario to a creepy stalker.

In addition to the jokes, the episode also includes some interesting trivia about the making of the movie. For example, they mention that the original script was much darker and more violent than the final product. They also point out that the filmmakers had a lot of trouble getting the rights to use the characters from the video game and that Nintendo was not involved in the production of the movie at all.

Overall, this episode of Honest Trailers is a hilarious and insightful look at a movie that has become infamous for its many flaws. Fans of Super Mario Bros. may be disappointed to see the beloved characters and universe turned into such a mess on the big screen, but they can at least take comfort in the fact that Honest Trailers has managed to find the humor in it all.
