In Homestead Rescue season 9 episode 9, titled "No Place Like Dome," the Raneys travel to a homestead in an Oregon forest to help a family struggling to survive in a dome structure. The dome was intended to be a sustainable and eco-friendly home for the family, but has become a death trap due to its deteriorating condition.
The Raneys first assess the dome's infrastructure and quickly realize the extent of the damage. The dome's walls are collapsing, the roof is leaking, and the support beams are weakened. Additionally, the family's water source has been compromised, and their toilet is overflowing, causing a health hazard.
Marty, Matt, and Misty Renaud spring into action, first by addressing the family's pressing sanitation issues. They repair the toilet and set up a composting system that will allow the family to stop using the overflowing septic system. They then focus on obtaining a clean water source, identifying a nearby stream as a viable option. The Raneys construct a water catchment system that collects and filters the stream water, providing clean H2O for the family.
Next, the Raneys tackle the failing structure of the dome. They shore up the walls and roof, adding supports where needed. They fortify the front entrance to prevent further damage. The Raneys also add a proper ventilation system to prevent mold and mildew growth.
With key needs met, the Raneys turn their attention to the family's long-term sustainability. They teach the family how to forage for food and how to compost to fertilize their garden. They lead a team effort to clear the overgrowth around the homestead to create a more open area for gardening.
As the episode concludes, the family is shown thriving in their newly renovated dome. They express gratitude and joy for the help they received from the Raneys, who provided the knowledge and tools they needed to not only survive but thrive on their homestead.
