The sixth installment of Homeland's 6th season, "The Return," sees Carrie Mathison (played by Claire Danes) face the consequences of her unauthorized operation in Iran. As she returns to the United States, circumstances force her to make a tough decision. Meanwhile, Dar Adal (played by F. Murray Abraham) meets with a former mentor in Washington D.C., revealing a bit more about his past than expected.
After being uncharacteristically insubordinate in her mission to rescue Max (played by Maury Sterling) in Iran, Carrie finds herself in hot water with her supervisor, Saul Berenson (played by Mandy Patinkin). Upon returning to the States, she’s forced to deal with the fallout of her actions while also trying to lay low and avoid the media frenzy that’s been following her every move.
In order to stay off the grid, Carrie holes up in an isolated cabin in the woods – but as luck would have it, she’s not alone. A mysterious man named Peter Quinn (played by Rupert Friend), who had been presumed dead, appears on her doorstep. Though this reunion is a relief, it’s clear that Quinn’s bleak experiences have had a lasting impact on him, and Carrie begins to question whether his presence will be a help or a hindrance in her continued efforts to stay under the radar.
Meanwhile, Dar Adal visits his former mentor Anna Pomerantseva (played by F. Murray Abraham), a once-brilliant KGB analyst who now spends her days and nights in a converted state hospital. Though the purpose of his visit is initially unclear, it soon becomes evident that Dar’s recent actions have been spurred by a stunning revelation from his past – one that Anna has been wrestling with for years.
The two engage in a conflict that comes to a boiling point as Dar reveals the full extent of his betrayal to Anna, and the horrifying truth behind his true allegiance.
With tensions mounting on all fronts, "The Return" sets the stage for a season that continues to grapple with the complexities of national security in the post-9/11 era. The episode ends on a cliffhanger, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the saga of Homeland.
