In season 5 episode 21 of Home Improvement titled "Engine And A Haircut, Two Fights," the focus is on Tim's beloved hot rod. Tim has been working on the car in his garage for weeks and is finally ready to start the engine. However, when he turns the key, nothing happens. He tries everything he can think of to get it to start, but nothing works. The frustration builds as Jill tries to help him troubleshoot the problem.
Meanwhile, Brad is busy focused on his own issues. He wants to dye his hair blonde, but he's afraid of what his girlfriend will think. He confides in Randy, who suggests that he try it out on some hair extensions first. This creates an opportunity for some hilarious hijinks as Brad's attempts to dye the extensions go awry.
Back in the garage, Tim finally figures out the problem with the car. He is ecstatic that he will finally be able to drive it again. But his joy is short-lived, as he realizes that he needs a special tool to complete the repair. This leads to a frantic search for the tool, with Tim and Jill tearing apart the garage in search of it. All the while, Brad is trying to keep his hair disaster under control.
As the episode comes to a close, both Tim and Brad have solved their problems. Tim finally gets his car running and is thrilled to take it out for a spin. Brad's hair, while not exactly what he wanted, looks good enough to keep him happy. The family comes together for a final scene as Tim shows off his car to everyone, including Brad with his new look. The episode ends on a high note as the whole family celebrates their small victories.
