In this episode of Home Improvement, entitled "What You See Is What You Get", the Taylor family is preparing for a video interview with Inside Detroit Magazine. Tim (played by Tim Allen) wants to showcase his newly-renovated garage on the show, but when Jill (played by Patricia Richardson) points out that the rest of the house is in a state of disarray, Tim starts to worry.
Meanwhile, Randy (played by Jonathan Taylor Thomas) is struggling to convince his girlfriend, Lauren, that he is different from his father and not just another "typical guy". When he goes to Jill for advice, she suggests that he try doing something thoughtful to show Lauren how much he cares about her. Randy decides to make her a personalized video message, using Tim's garage as his recording studio.
Back at the house, Tim is frantically trying to clean up as the reporter from Inside Detroit arrives. But when he accidentally locks himself in the garage, he has to call Al (played by Richard Karn) for help. Al brings over his new girlfriend, Ilene, who turns out to be a professional organizer. She helps Tim quickly declutter and organize the rest of the house, just in time for the video interview.
As they finish up, Randy comes in with his video message for Lauren. Everyone gathers around to watch it, and they are all touched by his heartfelt words. Tim even gets a little emotional himself, realizing that Randy is growing up and becoming a thoughtful and caring young man.
In the end, the Taylor family comes together to support each other and show their love in their own unique ways. With their house looking better than ever and their relationships stronger than ever, they are ready to face whatever challenges come their way.
