- October 9, 2013
Holmes Makes it Right is a home renovation show, hosted by Mike Holmes, that aims to fix homes that have been poorly built or abandoned by previous contractors. Every episode of the show takes on a new home that requires major renovations in order to make it safe and livable again.
In season 2 episode 7, titled "5 Years Old," Mike Holmes takes on the renovation of a home belonging to a single mother. The house is over five years old, and it has already begun showing signs of wear and tear. The homeowner has noticed cracks in the foundation, pests in the attic, and a leaky roof. She's worried about the safety of her family and wants Mike's help.
Mike and his team start their assessment of the house by examining the foundation. They find that the footings, which are meant to hold the foundation in place, are too small for the size and weight of the house. Mike decides that the only solution is to take down the house and rebuild it from the ground up. This decision means that they will have to remove all of the furniture and belongings from the house, and the family will have to live somewhere else for a few months.
Next up, the team tackles the problem of pests in the attic. They find raccoons and squirrels living in the attic and decide to install a one-way door to let the animals out. They also seal off any potential entry points for pests to prevent them from coming back.
Once the house is free of pests, the team moves on to the roof. They find that the shingles are old and worn out, and there is a lot of moisture buildup. Mike decides to replace the roof with a metal roof that can withstand harsh weather conditions and last for many years. They also add insulation to the attic to prevent any future moisture buildup.
During the course of the renovation, Mike learns that the homeowner is also struggling with a health issue. He decides to go above and beyond his usual scope of work to install a chair lift for the stairs. This addition will make the house more accessible and safe for the homeowner.
As the renovation progresses, Mike and his team encounter several unexpected challenges. They run into issues with the plumbing, electrical system, and framing. However, they tackle each problem head-on, and with Mike's expertise and the team's hard work, they are able to overcome every obstacle.
Finally, after several months of hard work, the new and improved house is revealed to the homeowner. She is overjoyed with the final result and can't believe the transformation. Mike and his team have truly turned her house into a home that is safe and comfortable for her and her family.
