Hold The Sunset is a British sitcom that aired on BBC1 from February 2018 to March 2019. The show stars the legendary John Cleese (Monty Python, Fawlty Towers) as Phil, a retiree who has been in love with his neighbor, Edith (played by Alison Steadman), for several decades. Jason Watkins plays Roger, Edith's son who is constantly trying to get his mother to move away and live with him.
The show is set in suburban England and centers around the relationship between Phil and Edith, who are both in their 70s. Phil has been waiting for Edith's husband, whose whereabouts are unknown for years, to return so that he can finally confess his love for her. Despite the fact that Edith has always had a soft spot for Phil, she is hesitant to act on her feelings and jeopardize their friendship.
Throughout the first season, the show features a number of twists and turns, including Phil's attempt to create a fake marriage in order to claim a tax break, and a heart attack suffered by Roger that forces him to rethink his relationship with his mother. Meanwhile, Edith's husband reappears after being in hiding for years, and Phil's daughter arrives from Canada to give her father a reality check.
Along the way, the show offers a host of laughs, heartwarming moments, and observations about growing old in today's society. One of the key themes of the show is the idea that it's never too late to pursue your dreams or find your true love, even if you've been waiting for decades.
John Cleese's performance as Phil is a standout, and his comedic timing and delivery are as sharp as ever. Alison Steadman is also excellent as Edith, capturing both the character's warmth and her occasional bouts of self-doubt. Jason Watkins rounds out the main cast with a strong performance as Roger, who often serves as the show's comic foil.
One of the strengths of the show is its supporting cast, which includes a number of well-known British actors such as Joanna Scanlan, Anne Reid, and Rosie Cavaliero. The show is also beautifully shot and features a number of picturesque locations around England.
Despite the fact that the show only lasted for two seasons (eight episodes in total), it left a lasting impression on audiences and critics alike. Many praised its witty writing, strong performances, and gentle humor, while others appreciated its willingness to tackle tough issues such as aging, mortality, and family dynamics. Hold The Sunset is a delightful and heartwarming sitcom that is sure to resonate with viewers of all ages.
