Hit & Miss is a British television drama series that premiered on Sky Atlantic in May 2012. Starring Chloë Sevigny as Mia, a transgender hitman who is facing one of the biggest challenges of her life, the show was created by Paul Abbott, the acclaimed writer of Shameless and State of Play.
The series follows the life of Mia, a New York-based contract killer, who gets a surprise call from her ex-girlfriend Wendy (Madeleine Worral) informing her that she has a son, Ryan (Maxwell McCabe-Lokos), a child she fathered before she transitioned into a woman. As Mia struggles to come to terms with this new responsibility, she moves to a small town in Northern England to meet the boy, who is living with his mother in a trailer. However, Miaâs arrival creates a rift in the family, which is further complicated by the fact that Ryan has developmental problems.
While trying to bond with her son, Mia also manages her new family, a group of rough-and-tumble neighbors who have their own secrets and problems. She must also balance her work as a hitman while dedicating herself to her son, who is struggling to come to terms with having a new parent who is unlike anyone he has ever met, let alone his real father.
The showâs title, Hit & Miss, sums up Miaâs life perfectly â with every high, comes a corresponding low. Alongside the adrenalin-fueled action scenes, the show also delves deep into Miaâs personal life and explores her experiences as a transgender woman, providing an emotional depth that is rare in this genre of television.
Throughout the series, Chloë Sevigny gives a captivating performance as Mia, portraying the character with sensitivity, vulnerability, and complexity, as well as the grit and toughness required of a trained killer. Her nuanced portrayal of Miaâs struggles with her identity, relationships, and the hardships of raising a child with special needs, demonstrates Sevigny's range as an actress.
The supporting cast is also excellent, with the actors portraying Miaâs family and neighbors as complex and nuanced individuals with their own distinct personalities and struggles. Jonas Armstrong is especially noteworthy as Ben, one of Miaâs neighbors who is struggling to provide for his family while dealing with his wifeâs infidelity.
The showâs cinematography is also impressive, using the bleak landscapes of Northern England to create a somber and moody atmosphere that matches the tone of the show. The use of natural lighting also adds to the realism of the series, making the viewer feel like they are watching a gritty, independent film.
Overall, Hit & Miss is a compelling drama that delves into the complexities of gender identity, family dynamics, and the realities of life as a hitman. With its nuanced performances, impressive cinematography, and emotionally charged storytelling, the show is a must-watch for anyone who loves dark, character-driven drama.
