In the first episode of Hillbilly Blood's first season entitled "Moonshine: Running Dry," we are introduced to Eugene Runkis, an experienced moonshine maker from the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky, and his young apprentice, Spencer "Two-Dogs."
The episode begins with Eugene anxious to get started on making a new batch of moonshine, as he has just sold the last of his previous batch. However, they quickly realize that their supply of sugar, a key ingredient in making moonshine, is running low. With only four pounds of sugar left, they set out to find more, which involves a journey over rugged terrain on foot and a tense encounter with a landowner with a shotgun.
After successfully obtaining the necessary sugar, they return home to begin making the moonshine. The process involves chopping and grinding corn in a homemade corn grinder, boiling the corn in a large pot, adding sugar and yeast, and distilling the mixture in a homemade still made from a beer keg. Throughout the process, Eugene emphasizes the importance of being careful with the flammable liquid and keeping the fire at a constant temperature.
As they work on the moonshine, Eugene teaches Spencer about the history of moonshine in the area, including its roots in the Prohibition era and how it was used as a source of income for many families. He also explains the dangers and legal consequences of making moonshine, and the need to keep their operation hidden from authorities.
After letting the moonshine ferment for several days, it is time to test the alcohol content using a hydrometer. Eugene and Spencer are disappointed to find that the alcohol content is lower than desired, likely due to a cooler-than-usual summer. However, they decide to continue with the distillation process and see what they can salvage.
The episode concludes with Eugene and Spencer loading up their finished product into jars and preparing to sell it to customers. Eugene emphasizes the importance of building relationships with their customers, who he refers to as "like family," and making sure they always have a quality product.
Overall, "Moonshine: Running Dry" sets the stage for the rest of the season by introducing viewers to the process of making moonshine and the dangers and history associated with it. It also highlights the mentor-mentee relationship between Eugene and Spencer and the importance of building relationships with their customers.
