Hey Dude is a television sitcom that aired on Nickelodeon from 1989 to 1991. The show follows a group of teenagers who work at the Bar None Dude Ranch in Arizona, their daily misadventures and the different guests they encounter. In the first season's first episode titled "Day One at The Bar None," viewers are introduced to the main characters and the ranch they will be spending their summer.
The episode starts with Ted (David Lascher), the new ranch hand, driving up to the Bar None Dude Ranch. He is greeted by Mr. Ernst (David Brisbin), the owner of the ranch, who gives him a brief tour. Ted soon realizes that he is the only new employee and is a bit nervous about fitting in with the rest of the staff. The rest of the staff includes Brad (Kelly Brown), the bossy and straight-laced head wrangler; Danny (Joe Torres), the laid-back Native American ranch hand; Melody (Christine Taylor), the carefree lifeguard; and Lucy (Debra Kalman), the bookish ranch hand.
The gang decides to play a prank on Ted to welcome him to the ranch. Brad tells Ted that Mr. Ernst has an angry pet snake named El Diablo and that he should stay away from it. Ted is understandably afraid of the snake and constantly tries to avoid it. However, when he sees the shadow of El Diablo on the wall, he decides to face his fears and approaches the snake. It turns out that the snake is just a garter snake, and the entire gang bursts out laughing, revealing that it was all a prank.
The group then goes on a trail ride with a large group of guests. Brad is in charge of leading the ride, but it quickly becomes clear that Mr. Ernst's instructions on which trail to take were not very clear, causing confusion among the staff and the guests. The group ends up getting lost and having to camp out overnight. Brad becomes increasingly annoyed with Mr. Ernst and his lack of organization, causing tension between the two.
Meanwhile, Melody ends up going on a romantic horse ride with one of the guests, much to Danny's disappointment. Danny had a crush on Melody and had hoped to take her out himself. However, Melody assures Danny that the guest is just a friend and that she is not interested in him romantically.
As the gang tries to make their way back to the ranch the next day, they encounter various obstacles, including a flooded river and a herd of cows blocking their path. During their journey, they find out that Mr. Ernst's mixed-up directions were due to him misreading a map. Ted steps up and suggests a different route, which turns out to be the correct one.
In the end, the staff and the guests make it back to the ranch safe and sound. Mr. Ernst admits to his mistake and promises to be more organized in the future. The gang makes amends and welcomes Ted to the Bar None, assuring him that he is part of the gang now.
Overall, "Day One at The Bar None" sets up the premise of the show, introducing the main characters and the setting of the Bar None Dude Ranch. The episode is filled with humor, hijinks, and a bit of drama. It's a great introduction to the show and is sure to leave viewers wanting more.
