In Hetalia season 1 episode 5, titled "Axis Powers: Episode 5", the audience gets more insight into the personalities of the three main characters - Germany, Italy, and Japan. The episode starts with Italy sleeping on Germany's couch as usual. However, Germany suddenly wakes Italy up and informs him that they have to undergo training in the woods. Italy, being lazy, attempts to avoid it, but Germany forces him to come along.
At the training ground, we see Japan for the first time. It is evident that Japan is physically weak and has a petite built. Germany instructs the trio to practice forming human pyramids: Germany at the bottom, followed by Japan and Italy at the top. Japan finds it extremely difficult to hold Italy and repeatedly fails.
Later, the three of them discuss their battle tactics against their enemies, particularly Britain and America. Italy suggests that they try to make peace with their enemies and not fight. However, both Germany and Japan think Italy is a coward for suggesting such a thing. This shows how different their personalities are, with Italy being more peace-loving and non-confrontational.
The next scene shows a meeting between all the allied forces, including America, Britain, France, China, and Russia. The allies discuss how they can take down the Axis Powers. However, their meeting turns chaotic as they argue amongst themselves. This scene shows that the allied forces are not united and have internal conflicts. On the other hand, the Axis powers are united and working together to achieve their goals.
Later in the episode, we see Italy struggle with the concept of being a soldier. He admits to feeling scared and unsure about fighting. Germany gives him a pep talk and tells him that everyone is scared but what sets soldiers apart is that they fight despite their fear. This is a poignant moment in the episode as we see Italy's vulnerability and Germany's understanding and encouraging side.
Towards the end of the episode, we see the trio trying out new battle tactics. They try to use their physical strength to overpower the enemy, but it doesn't work, and they are left defeated. Japan suggests that they should try using his expertise in technology to create weapons that will aid them in battles. Germany agrees to the idea, showcasing his adaptability and willingness to try new strategies.
Throughout the episode, we see the difference in how the Axis powers and Allied forces approach warfare. The Axis powers are more organized and united, while the Allied forces have their internal conflicts and disagreements.
Overall, Hetalia season 1 episode 5 is a crucial episode as it focuses on character development and shows the personalities of the main characters. We see how different they are despite being allies and how they work together to overcome their weaknesses and achieve their goals. The episode also showcases the contrast between the Axis powers and the Allied forces and sets the stage for future plot developments.
