In the third season of the popular show Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, fans were treated to an episode titled "Love Takes a Holiday." This episode was packed with action, adventure, and a healthy dose of romance.
The episode opens with Hercules (played by Kevin Sorbo) and his sidekick Iolaus (played by Michael Hurst) enjoying a beautiful day in the countryside. Just as they're about to settle down for a picnic, they're interrupted by a young woman named Serena (played by Shiri Appleby). Serena is a member of Aphrodite's (played by Alexandra Tydings) entourage and she's been sent to ask for Hercules' help.
We soon discover that Aphrodite is upset because she feels that people only love each other when they're under her influence. She wants to see what true love looks like, and to do that she plans to take a holiday from her duties as the goddess of love. But in order to ensure that everything runs smoothly while she's gone, she needs someone to take her place – and she's chosen Iolaus to be her replacement.
Iolaus is initially reluctant to take on such a responsibility, but Hercules convinces him that it's the right thing to do. And so Iolaus sets off to spread love and desire across the land, with Hercules and Serena in tow.
As they travel, they encounter a number of people who are struggling with matters of the heart. There's a young couple who are madly in love but are forbidden from marrying by their warring families. There's a lonely farmer who's looking for a wife. And there's also a group of women who are being held captive by a tyrannical chieftain – but who are all hopelessly in love with him.
Iolaus uses his newfound power to spread love wherever he goes, and before long the young couple are united, the farmer finds a wife, and even the chieftain starts to develop feelings for one of his captives. Meanwhile, Hercules and Serena grow closer as they travel together. There's a definite spark between them, and they both seem to be enjoying each other's company.
But as the day wears on, things start to go wrong. Iolaus' powers start to wane, and the people who were once in love begin to lose interest in each other. It turns out that true love can't be forced, and that the heart will always wants what it wants – whether there's a goddess of love around or not.
As the episode comes to a close, Aphrodite returns to her duties, chastened by what she's seen. She's learned that love can't be controlled, that it's a force that's bigger than all of us. Hercules and Serena share a bittersweet goodbye, with both acknowledging that their feelings for each other are real but that now isn't the right time for them to be together.
In the end, "Love Takes a Holiday" is a fun and lighthearted episode that explores the many different forms that love can take. Whether it's the intense passion between a young couple, the companionship that develops between two friends, or the longing that a lonely farmer feels for a companion, the show reminds us that love is a universal force that can bring both joy and pain.
