Heavy Object is a sci-fi anime series from FUNimation that originally aired in 2015. The show is based on the light novel series of the same name written by Kazuma Kamachi and illustrated by Ryou Nagi. The premise of the show is set in a world where wars are fought using large, humanoid objects called "Objects." These Objects are massive weapons, measuring up to 50 meters in height and weighing over 200,000 tons. They are equipped with powerful weapons, shields, and other defensive mechanisms, making them formidable on the battlefield.
The story follows two soldiers in the Legitimate Kingdom, Qwenthur and Havia, who are assigned to a unit responsible for destroying Objects. Qwenthur is a brilliant engineer who is able to analyze and understand the inner workings of Objects, while Havia is a skilled marksman and strategist. Together, they use their expertise to take on seemingly impossible missions to destroy Objects.
In the first episode, the two soldiers are sent to Alaska to destroy an Object that is threatening a nearby naval base. There, they encounter a teenage pilot named Milinda Brantini, who is tasked with piloting the Object. Despite the odds against them, Qwenthur and Havia work together to come up with a plan to exploit a weakness in the Object's design and successfully destroy it.
As the series progresses, Qwenthur and Havia are tasked with taking on more difficult missions, facing more powerful Objects and enemies along the way. Milinda also becomes a more prominent character, and we learn more about her background and motivations.
What sets Heavy Object apart from other mecha anime shows is the emphasis on strategy and tactics. Qwenthur and Havia rarely engage in direct combat with the Objects; rather, they focus on finding weaknesses in the Objects' designs and exploiting them to their advantage. This leads to some tense and exciting battles that keep the viewer engaged throughout the series.
The show also features some great character development. Qwenthur and Havia have a strong bond, but they also have their differences that cause tension between them. Milinda also grows as a character, developing new skills and becoming more confident in her abilities as a pilot.
In addition to the main trio, there are also a number of supporting characters that add depth and complexity to the story. These include other soldiers in the Legitimate Kingdom, as well as members of rival factions who have their own agendas.
The animation in Heavy Object is top-notch, with detailed character designs and impressive backgrounds. The mecha design is also unique, with the Objects looking like giant metal beetles with glowing red eyes. The action sequences are well-choreographed, and the sound design is excellent, adding to the tension and excitement of the battles.
The show also features a great soundtrack, with an opening theme that perfectly captures the tone of the series. The voice acting is also impressive, with the actors bringing their characters to life with nuance and emotion.
Overall, Heavy Object is a well-crafted sci-fi anime series that is sure to appeal to fans of mecha and military-themed shows. With its emphasis on strategy and tactics, great character development, and impressive animation, it is definitely worth a watch.
