Amy and Ty are preparing for a weekend trip to Scott's cabin, but they find a mare wandering along the highway. Amy manages to save the horse and they bring her back to Heartland. Upon examination, it is discovered that the mare has a microchip, which leads them to the previous owner. The owner is surprised to hear her horse has been found, as she thought the mare was dead. She explains that the mare was a racehorse that she had kept for breeding, but had disappeared two years ago.
As Amy and Ty work with the mare, they realize that she has been traumatized. The mare is afraid of being ridden and even of being touched in certain areas. It becomes clear that the mare has some unresolved emotional issues. Meanwhile, Tim and Jack are embroiled in a debate over a new truck. Tim wants to buy a brand new truck, but Jack thinks it is a waste of money and that they should stick with the old one.
Back at Heartland, Amy and Ty are trying to help the mare, but they are having a difficult time figuring out what happened to her. They eventually discover that the previous owner had put the mare through some grueling training, which had scarred her both physically and emotionally. Amy realizes that the mare needs to be rehabilitated in order to overcome her fears.
As Amy works with the mare, she begins to uncover more information about the horse's past. She discovers that the previous owner had been forced to sell the mare, and that she had been passed around from owner to owner until finally ending up in a bad situation. This explains why the mare had disappeared two years ago, and why the previous owner had thought she was dead.
As the rehabilitation process continues, Amy and Ty begin to see progress in the mare. The horse is becoming more comfortable with being touched and with being ridden. They also discover that the mare has a hidden talent for jumping. As they work with the mare, they realize that she could become a great show jumper.
Eventually, the previous owner comes to Heartland to see the mare. She is impressed by the progress that Amy and Ty have made with the horse, and she is happy to see that the mare is in good hands. She asks if she can take the horse back, but Amy and Ty explain that they think the mare would be better off staying at Heartland. They offer to let the previous owner come to Heartland to visit her whenever she likes.
In the end, Amy and Ty decide to take the mare to a small competition to see how she performs. The mare exceeds their expectations, and they realize that they have a new prospect for show jumping. As they head back to Heartland, they reflect on how far the mare has come and how much they have learned from her. They are excited to continue working with her and to help her reach her full potential.
"A Horse With No Rider" is a heartwarming episode that showcases the bond between humans and animals. It highlights the importance of patience and understanding when working with traumatized animals, and demonstrates how dedication and hard work can turn a sad situation into a success story. Additionally, the episode offers a lighthearted subplot about the importance of frugality and not giving in to materialistic desires, which provides a nice balance to the emotional main plot.
