Heartland Docs, DVM is a television show that takes viewers on a journey through the daily lives of a married couple who are also veterinary doctors and own a clinic in rural Nebraska. In the show's eleventh episode titled "Hold Your Horses," Dr. Ben and Dr. Erin Schroeder face new challenges as they try to provide the best care for their animal patients.
The episode opens with the doctors receiving a call about a horse that needs urgent attention. The owners of the horse explain that it has been acting strange since the morning, constantly pawing at the ground and acting anxious. The doctors quickly pack their bags and head to the farm where the horse is kept.
Upon arrival, they find the horse in a state of distress. The doctors go through their usual examination routine, trying to identify the source of the problem. They check the horse’s eyes, mouth, and various other parts of its body, but nothing seems out of the ordinary. In an attempt to identify the problem, Dr. Erin decides to perform an ultrasound on the horse, which reveals a possible case of colic – the horse's intestines are twisted, causing severe pain and discomfort.
The doctors know that time is of the essence, and they start on a treatment plan immediately. They give the horse medication to help with the pain and try to alleviate the blockage in its intestines. The horse is in critical condition, and the doctors must decide whether to keep the animal at the farm and monitor it or to bring the horse to their clinic for intensive care.
As the doctors leave the farm, they receive another call about a young goat with a mysterious eye infection. They make their way to a neighboring farm to examine the goat, which shows signs of having a respiratory infection as well. By injecting the goat with antibiotics and providing it with sufficient fluids, the doctors are able to treat it effectively and provide relief to the worried owner.
Later on, the doctors find themselves in a rather amusing situation when they are called out to a farm where a cow has gone into labor. Upon arriving, they are shocked to find that the cow's calf is actually a miniature version of the average size calf. The doctors help the cow deliver the baby, and they are delighted to find that it is healthy and happy.
As the episode comes to a close, the Schroeders receive a visit from a pet parent who needs help with her cat's issues. After a thorough examination, they discover that the cat needs a minor surgery, and the doctors immediately schedule a time to perform the procedure. Through their dedication and hard work, the doctors successfully help the animals in their care and leave their clients satisfied and at ease.
Heartland Docs, DVM season 1 episode 11, "Hold Your Horses," is a perfect example of the struggles and triumphs of being a veterinarian. The episode showcases the doctors' expertise and their ability to handle unexpected and difficult situations with ease and grace. The Schroeders are truly an excellent example of the care and compassion that is required to be successful and effective veterinary doctors.
