As Time Goes By
In season 1 episode 11 of Head of the Class, titled As Time Goes By, Charlie's history class is assigned a project that will take them back in time. The students are each asked to pick a decade from the 20th century and research everything that happened during that time. To make the project more interactive, the students are also tasked with recreating a piece of history, such as a famous speech, a movie, or a historical event.
The students are excited to get started and decide to split into groups. Maria, Arvid, and Darlene choose the 50s, Janice and Simone opt for the 60s, and Dennis and Sarah take on the 70s. Charlie advises them to focus on the historical events that impacted society as a whole, and not just pop culture events of the time period.
Dennis and Sarah are initially excited about their decade, but as they research, they begin to realize that the 70s were a tumultuous time. They struggle to choose between the major historical events of that decade, such as the Vietnam War, Watergate scandal, and the feminist movement. Eventually, they decide to focus on the feminist movement and the landmark Supreme Court case, Roe v. Wade.
Janice and Simone choose the 60s, a time of major civil rights movements and social change. They decide to recreate Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech. As they practice and rehearse, they begin to appreciate the enormity of the speech and the impact it had on history.
Maria, Arvid, and Darlene choose the 50s, a time known for its social conservatism and conformity. They decide to make a film about the stereotype of the "perfect American family." As they research and film, they begin to realize how the idealized family structure of the time excluded many people and how the conformist ideals of the 50s clashed with the social movements of the following decades.
As the deadline approaches, the students present their projects to the class. Each group's presentation is met with mixed reactions. Charlie is impressed with the students' work and appreciates how they've learned to think critically about history and its impact on society.
Overall, season 1 episode 11 of Head of the Class provides an interesting look at how historical events have impacted society. The students learn valuable lessons while conducting their research, and the episode encourages viewers to reflect on the importance of understanding the past to inform the present and future.
