In the fifth episode of Haven's second season, titled "Roots," we find our beloved characters Audrey and Nathan investigating a deadly outbreak in a local high school. When the episode begins, we see that a group of students suddenly falls ill, with strange rashes covering their skin. Nathan, Audrey, and Dr. Claire Callahan (their latest ally in the investigation) all rush to the school to investigate the outbreak.
As they dig deeper, they find that the cause of the outbreak is due to a few specific students. While initially, they're all stumped as to what could be causing their symptoms, Audrey has a hunch it's something to do with the students' family trees. As Audrey digs through records looking for common ancestors among the affected students, Nathan and Dr. Claire start to feel the status quo of Haven may be unraveling.
As they investigate further, they learn the outbreak is due to a family curse. The source of the curse is a timeless figure that has visited Haven periodically throughout the centuries. With each visit, the entity infects a member of the same family line, leading to an outbreak of sickness and death. Nathan and Audrey team up to discover the identity of this "curse-bearer" and find a way to stop the curse from taking hold in Haven yet again.
In the end, Audrey and Nathan are successful in their mission, stopping the lineage of misery and death from continuing in Haven, for now. However, this episode isn't just about the intrigue and mystery. It also takes a deeper look at our characters, with Audrey learning more about why the people of Haven are drawn to her as an FBI agent, and Nathan finally confiding in Dr. Callahan about his troubles.
As the season progresses, Haven continues to walk the line between the supernatural and the personal, making for some of the series' most memorable episodes yet. "Roots" is no exception and provides a thrilling addition to the series' ongoing mythology while giving us more insight into our favorite characters.
