Audrey Parker is struck by a peculiar crime when a prisoner escapes from a penitentiary located in Haven. Although she and Nathan Wuornos take on the case as a routine police investigation, the prisoner's wife Janet makes things complicated. Janet claims that since her husband escaped, strange things have started happening to her. She believes she’s the reason behind her husband's strange affliction, and is willing to any lengths to help him.
Aided by Duke Crocker's research, they discover that an artifact in the past had caused the same strange affliction in individuals. Though they find the object is now missing, it comes to light that Janet has the object as her "Ball and Chain" – her lucky charm – that the prisoner had given her. Meanwhile, the prisoner, estranged and alone, attempts to find his wife to give her one last goodbye before he dies.
Audrey, Nathan, and Duke must find a way to bring Janet and her husband together to put an end to the strange affliction consuming him before it's too late. As the investigation progresses, Audrey and Nathan grow closer as they learn more about each other. The episode ends on a sombre note as the team unsuccessfully saves the prisoner's life.
With the fourth episode focusing on Duke's back-story, in episode 5, the show shifts its focus back to the case, and it's handled quite well. The exploration of relationships isn't just between Audrey and Nathan, but also between Janet and her husband, whose tender moments hit emotionally during the episode. Also, the show does well in its portrayal of Janet’s desperation to cling to any hope for her husband's recovery.
Overall, episode 5 amalgamates the supernatural, along with the human condition, effectively, making for an emotionally nuanced experience. The episode progresses without any stumbles in its coherent narrative and makes for a compelling watch.
