In "Shot by Request," the fifth episode of the third season of Have Gun, Will Travel, Paladin finds himself in a small town with a big problem. After receiving a cryptic telegram that reads "Request your presence for a killing," he travels to the town of Hardwater to uncover the truth behind the message.
Upon arriving in town, Paladin meets with the local sheriff who informs him of a recent murder. The victim was a wealthy landowner named Joshua Winthrop who was shot in cold blood as he was riding through the town. The sheriff has no leads on the killer and asks Paladin for his help in solving the case.
Paladin begins to investigate and quickly discovers that almost everyone in the town had a motive for killing Winthrop. The victim was a ruthless businessman who made enemies of almost everyone he came in contact with. He owned most of the town's businesses and had a reputation for treating his employees poorly. He also had a long-standing feud with the local ranchers over grazing rights.
Paladin soon finds himself caught in the middle of a dangerous power struggle between the town's competing factions. On the one hand, there are the ranchers who are struggling to survive in the face of Winthrop's greed. On the other hand, there are the businessmen who rely on Winthrop's money to keep their own businesses afloat.
As Paladin delves deeper into the case, he uncovers a web of lies and deceit that leads him to the identity of the killer. But before he can bring the killer to justice, he must first navigate a dangerous game of cat and mouse that puts his own life in jeopardy.
