Paladin is hired by a group of landowners to deal with a band of squatters who have settled on their land. The squatters, led by a reasonable and logical man named Mr. Haig, refuse to leave claiming that they have a legal right to the land under the Homestead Act. Paladin initially tries to reason with Mr. Haig, hoping to find a peaceful solution to the problem, but the situation quickly escalates into violence.
As the conflict intensifies, Paladin finds himself caught between the landowners, who are desperate to regain their property, and the squatters, who are equally determined to hold onto their claim. Mr. Haig, who initially seems like a reasonable man, becomes more and more stubborn and unwilling to compromise, leading Paladin to question his true motives.
As the two sides clash, Paladin must navigate a complex web of legal, moral, and ethical issues, all while trying to avoid bloodshed. Along the way, he faces a number of challenges, including a scheming lawyer, a corrupt judge, and a violent gang of hired guns.
Ultimately, Paladin is forced to take sides and make a difficult decision that could have far-reaching consequences for everyone involved. In the end, he must use all of his skill and courage to bring about a peaceful resolution to the conflict, even if it means putting his own life on the line.
