Zoe Hart is a New York doctor who has relocated to Bluebell, Alabama, to fulfill a contract she inherited from a father she never knew. In the small town, Zoe is met with a welcoming community, but also with a few adversaries, particularly in the form of her rival, Lemon Breeland. Hart of Dixie season 2 episode 6, titled "I Walk The Line," picks up with Zoe still navigating her new life in Bluebell.
The episode opens with a fierce ping-pong match between Wade and Lavon. Lavon wins, and his victory is short-lived as he is called away to handle a crisis at the mayor's office. Meanwhile, Zoe is surprised by an unexpected phone call from her estranged father. She is hesitant to hear him out, but eventually agrees to meet him for breakfast.
At the mayor's office, Lavon is faced with a dilemma. The town's annual Heritage Day festival, which celebrates Bluebell's history, is coming up, and the organizers have chosen to honor a controversial figure, Buford Humphries. Buford was a wealthy landowner who owned slaves in the antebellum South, and Lavon believes it would be inappropriate to honor him. However, the town council insists on going forward with the tribute.
Elsewhere, George and Tansy are adjusting to their newfound relationship. They are still keeping it a secret from the rest of the town, as Tansy's ex-husband Randy is still causing trouble. When George runs into Lemon at the Rammer Jammer, she warns him that Tansy is trouble and that he should stay away from her. George is conflicted but ultimately decides to stand by Tansy.
At breakfast, Zoe meets her father, Dr. Ethan Hart, for the first time. Their meeting is tense and awkward, as Zoe has a lot of unresolved anger towards him. Dr. Hart explains that he left Zoe and her mother when Zoe was just a baby because he thought his work as a surgeon was more important. He has always regretted it and wishes he could make it up to Zoe. Zoe is skeptical but agrees to meet him again.
Meanwhile, Lavon is still trying to figure out how to handle the Heritage Day tribute. He turns to Wade for advice, and they come up with a plan to honor a different historical figure, a former slave who helped to build Bluebell. Lavon presents this idea to the town council, and they eventually agree to it.
As the episode comes to a close, Zoe is struggling with her complicated feelings towards her father. She turns to Wade for comfort, and they end up spending the night together. Tansy and George's relationship is on the brink of being exposed when Randy shows up at the Rammer Jammer and sees them together. And Lavon is relieved that the Heritage Day festival is going to honor someone he can be proud of.
"I Walk The Line" is a poignant episode of Hart of Dixie that explores the complexities of family, history, and relationships. As always, the show has a perfect mix of humor and heart, and the charming Southern setting adds to the overall warmth of the show.
