Zoe Hart is ready for the holidays and decked out in her festive apparel. She has even convinced Wade Kinsella to participate in her yuletide fun by posing as Santa Claus at the Mermaid Bar's Christmas block party. However, Zoe's spirits are dampened when Dr. Brick Breeland informs her that she has to leave Bluebell on Christmas Eve to visit her relatives in New York.
While Zoe is in New York, the town holds a charity event to raise money for a young boy who needs a heart transplant. Lavon Hayes is in charge of the event, but he feels a bit overwhelmed due to the constant bickering between Lemon Breeland and Annabeth Nass. Meanwhile, George Tucker is struggling with his own holiday blues after learning that he has to work on Christmas.
Zoe's absence is particularly noticeable for her mother, Candice Hart, who shows up unannounced in Bluebell. Candice is not pleased to learn that her daughter is spending Christmas away from her family. However, Candice quickly finds herself caught up in the holiday spirit and becomes a bit of a local celebrity due to her homemade eggnog.
As Christmas Eve approaches, Zoe is stuck in a New York airport due to a snowstorm. She frets over being able to make it back to Bluebell in time for Christmas and the charity event. Meanwhile, Wade is left to deal with the chaos at the party, which includes a tipsy and overly-amorous chef Judson Lyons.
Despite the various obstacles and mishaps, the Bluebell community comes together to make the holiday season a memorable one. Even Zoe's unexpected return home does not stop the celebration, and the town ultimately raises enough money to help the sick young boy.
Overall, the "Blue Christmas" episode of Hart of Dixie shows the importance of community and support during the holiday season. Despite challenges and setbacks, the Bluebell residents come together to share love and cheer with each other.
