In the first episode of season 3 of Harlots, we are immediately transported back to the world of the 18th century sex trade in London. As always, the show starts with a bang, as we see a group of women being dragged through the streets by their captors. These women are not prostitutes, but rather prisoners who have been sentenced to transportation to the colonies for petty crimes. This scene sets the tone for the entire episode; one of fear, violence, and uncertainty.

We soon catch up with our main characters. Charlotte Wells, who has survived the events of season 2, is now running her own brothel, with some help from her exasperated mother, Margaret. Their relationship is as fraught as ever, with Margaret constantly trying to take control, while Charlotte yearns for independence and agency. On the other side of town, Lydia Quigley is still plotting and scheming. We see her attempt to strike up a business deal with a wealthy and well-respected woman named Nancy Birch, but it quickly becomes apparent that Nancy is not the pushover Lydia was hoping for.

One of the most striking things about this episode is the way it deals with power dynamics and the limitations placed upon women in the 18th century. We see how law enforcement plays a big role in keeping women in their place, with Charolette struggling to keep her brothel open amidst constant threats of police raids and arrests. We also see how religion and social norms continue to control women's bodies, with one character facing ostracism from her community after getting pregnant out of wedlock. Harlots continues to explore these themes in a nuanced and thought-provoking way, never shying away from the harsh realities of life in this time period.

While the episode deals with heavy and serious subject matter, there are also lighter moments of humor and warmth. We see some of the women of Golden Square attempting to gain more power by forming a collective, and their scenes together are filled with lively banter and camaraderie. We also see some adorable scenes between Lucy Wells (Charlotte's sister) and her new beau, a charming young man named Lord Repton. Their scenes together provide a welcome respite from the darker aspects of the show.

All in all, the first episode of season 3 manages to set up some intriguing storylines that will no doubt be explored throughout the season. Lydia Quigley's deal with Nancy Birch is bound to lead to trouble, and the burgeoning romance between Lucy and Lord Repton has the potential to cause drama between the Wells sisters. With its sharp writing, complex characters, and gorgeous production design, Harlots continues to be one of the most interesting and unique shows on television.
