Ep 2. 2nd Life: Shio's Miniature Garden

Happy Sugar Life season 1 episode 2, titled "2nd Life: Shio's Miniature Garden," follows the story of Satou Matsuzaka, a high school girl who's in love with her younger step-sister, Shio. In the previous episode, Satou murdered her ex-boyfriend and kept his corpse in her apartment. She's now living with Shio, who's unaware of her sister's dark side.

The episode begins with Satou working at a restaurant alongside her classmate, Shouko Hida. Shouko, who seems to be interested in Satou, invites her to come over to her house and help her look after a garden. Satou declines the offer, saying that she's not interested in gardening.

After work, Satou goes back to her apartment where she finds her neighbor, Taiyo, trying to get rid of his pet bird. Taiyo tells Satou that he's moving to a new apartment where pets aren't allowed, and he can't take the bird with him. Satou, who hates the sound of the bird, agrees to take it in. She takes the bird to her room and places it in a cage next to the corpse of her ex-boyfriend.

Meanwhile, Shio goes to school and meets a girl named Asahi who's new to the school. Asahi is immediately drawn to Shio's kindness and innocence and asks her to show her around the school. Shio agrees, and the two become fast friends.

After school, Shio goes home to find Satou trying to make a miniature garden for her in a small glass jar. Satou tells Shio that the garden will represent their happy life together and that they'll keep it safe in the jar forever. Shio is delighted at the gift and quickly gets to work on adding her own touches to the garden.

As the day comes to a close, Satou receives a phone call from Shouko, who's worried that Satou might be in trouble. Satou brushes off her concerns, but Shouko persists and tells Satou that she'll come over to her apartment to make sure she's okay. Satou hangs up the phone, visibly annoyed at Shouko's persistence.

Later that night, Satou has a nightmare where she's trapped in a dark room, and the walls are closing in on her. She wakes up in a panic and goes to check on Shio, who's sound asleep beside her. Satou calms down and falls back to sleep.

The following day, Satou goes to school where she runs into Shouko once again. Shouko tells Satou that she's worried about her, and that she has a feeling that Satou is hiding something. Satou dismisses her concerns and tells her that everything is fine.

The episode ends with Taiyo coming over to Satou's apartment to say goodbye to his bird. He's shocked to see the miniature garden and compliments Satou on her creativity. Satou tells him that it's a gift for her little sister, and Taiyo comments on how lucky Shio is to have such a caring sister. Satou smiles to herself, knowing that she'll do anything to protect Shio and their happy life together.
