At the beginning of the episode, Marion receives a letter from the IRS informing her that she has made an error on her tax return and owes a significant amount of money in back taxes. Marion is understandably upset and worried about how she will be able to pay the hefty sum.
To make matters worse, Marion’s friend and neighbor, Mrs. Bertha Frommeyer, comes over to borrow some of Marion’s jewelry for her daughter’s wedding. After Mrs. Frommeyer leaves, Marion realizes that one of her diamond earrings is missing and starts to panic. She accuses Mrs. Frommeyer of stealing the earring and alerts the police.
However, when the police arrive, they discover that the missing earring is actually stuck to Marion’s back via a piece of gum. Embarrassed and humiliated, Marion insists that the police arrest her in order to save face in front of her neighbors and friends.
Marion’s arrest and subsequent time in jail prompt the rest of the Happy Days gang to come together to try to help her. Richie and the guys try to raise money by throwing a benefit concert, while Howard goes to great lengths to try to get Marion released from jail.
In the end, Howard is able to convince the judge to release Marion on bail, and the Happy Days gang is able to come up with enough money to pay off her back taxes. Marion is grateful to her friends and family for their support and realizes that she doesn’t need to be embarrassed or ashamed to ask for help when she needs it.
