Richie Cunningham and his friend Ralph Malph are at the bowling alley when they overhear some guys talking about a new nightclub in town. They convince the owner, Al, to give them jobs as bartenders so they can check it out. Meanwhile, Officer Kirk sends out a warning about a burglary in the neighborhood and advises everyone to lock their doors and windows.
The next day, Richie and Ralph go to the nightclub to start their jobs. At first, they are excited to be working in a cool and trendy place but soon realize that they are not cut out for the job. They struggle to mix drinks and handle the rowdy crowds. To make matters worse, a group of tough-looking bikers come in and start causing trouble.
Just as Richie and Ralph are about to call it quits, a man dressed in black bursts into the club and steals the cash register. The bikers give chase, and Richie and Ralph follow them out of the club. They find the getaway car but lose it in a high-speed chase.
The next day, the boys are questioned by Officer Kirk about what they saw. They are able to give him a description of the robber and the license plate number of the car. Kirk, who is a big fan of detective novels, decides to stake out the club that night to catch the thief.
That night, Kirk is hiding in the bushes outside the club with his gun drawn when he sees a shadowy figure approach. He fires a warning shot, but the figure disappears into the night. Kirk is convinced that he has shot the robber, but when he investigates, he sees that he has actually shot his own hat. Humiliated, he decides to resign from the police force.
The boys feel responsible for Kirk's predicament and decide to catch the thief themselves. They go back to the club and stake it out. They use a miniature camera to capture the thief's picture and find out that he is actually the club's owner, Al. He had been embezzling money from the club and was using the robbery as a cover-up.
In the end, Kirk is reinstated to the force, and the boys become heroes for solving the case. Al goes to jail, and the nightclub is closed down. The boys realize that they are not cut out for the world of bartending and decide to stick to what they know best, staying out of trouble in their happy little town of Milwaukee.
