This comes as a shock to Fran as she has been struggling to make ends meet ever since the divorce. Fran initially refuses to pay Peter any spousal support, but she soon realizes she has no choice but to do so as Peter is threatening to take her to court.
The episode then follows Fran as she struggles to come up with the funds to pay Peter his spousal support. She realizes that she will have to take on extra hours at work, and even starts to consider finding a second job. Fran's best friend and co-worker Judi offers to lend her some money, but Fran is reluctant to take her up on her offer.
As the day of the wedding approaches, Fran starts to feel anxious about attending the wedding. She confides in her mother and brother about her feelings, and they both assure her that everything will be okay. Fran's brother even offers to accompany her to the wedding, which helps put her at ease.
At the wedding, Fran gives a touching speech about Peter, which is met with a standing ovation from the guests. However, when Fran gets home from the wedding, she finds out that Peter has sent her another letter, stating that he wants her to pay for half of his new husband's medical bills.
Fran is angry and feels betrayed by Peter once again. She confides in Judi about the letter, and Judi tells her that she needs to stand up for herself and not let Peter take advantage of her. Fran realizes that she has been too passive in the past and that she needs to start standing up for herself.
The episode ends with Fran going to Peter's house to confront him about his request for spousal support and medical bills. Fran tells Peter that she has been struggling financially and that she cannot afford to pay him any more money. Peter tells Fran that he understands, and the two come to an agreement that is fair to both of them.
Overall, the episode "Spousal Support" is a heartfelt and emotional look at the struggles of divorce.
