Handy Manny is an animated television show that centers around a handyman named Manny Garcia and his anthropomorphic talking tools. In Season 3, Episode 15, we find Manny and his team solving problems in their community as they usually do. The episode is aptly named Story Hour / Long John Lopart.
In the first half of the episode, entitled, Story Hour, Manny and the tools are invited to read stories to a group of children at the local library. When they arrive, they meet a young girl named Isabella who is nervous about reading aloud in front of others. To help her overcome her fears, Manny suggests that she practice reading her story to the tools. As they listen, they offer her encouragement and helpful suggestions on how to improve her reading. With their help, Isabella gains the confidence she needs to read her story to the group at the library. The story she reads has a valuable lesson about teamwork and how, through cooperation, we can accomplish great things.
In the second half of the episode, Long John Lopart, Manny receives a call from Mr. Lopart, the owner of the local candy store. Mr. Lopart has accidentally locked himself inside the store and needs Manny's help to get out. When Manny arrives, he discovers that the tools have a healthy fear of Long John Lopart, who has a bit of a reputation for being a bit sneaky. Seeing an opportunity to teach the tools about judging a book by its cover, Manny shows them that Long John is just a lonely man who wants to be friends. With a little help from the tools, Long John is able to break out of his shell and make some new friends.
Throughout the episode, viewers are treated to charming songs and catchy tunes that underscore the importance of teamwork, courage and friendship. The animation is adorable and colorful, making it a hit with younger viewers. However, the storytelling is engaging enough to keep parents of young children interested as well.
Handy Manny is a show that manages to instruct while entertaining.
