In episode 4 of Hand of God season 1, titled "He So Loved," the story continues to revolve around Judge Pernell Harris (portrayed by Ron Perlman), a man struggling with his faith after his son attempted suicide and was left in a coma. Pernell continues to receive visions from God, or so he believes, as he tries to solve the case of the corrupt church led by the Reverend Paul Curtis (portrayed by Julian Morris).
The episode opens with Pernell learning that his son's medical bills have reached $3 million, a daunting sum for a judge whose salary is around $150,000 a year. Pernell's wife, Crystal (portrayed by Dana Delany), urges him to accept help from her father, who is wealthy and well-connected, but Pernell refuses, determined to find a way to pay the bills on his own.
Meanwhile, we see Paul Curtis continuing to manipulate his congregation, preaching about the end of the world and urging his followers to give him all their money so they can prepare for the apocalypse. However, we also see cracks in Curtis's facade as he confides in his assistant, Alicia (portrayed by Elizabeth McLaughlin), about his doubts and insecurities.
The episode also introduces a new character, Jocelyn Davies (portrayed by Alona Tal), a detective who is investigating a homicide case that seems to be linked to Curtis and his church. Pernell becomes interested in the case and offers to help Jocelyn, but she is suspicious of him and reluctant to accept his assistance.
As the episode progresses, we see Pernell struggling with his faith and his role as a judge. He begins to question whether his visions are actually messages from God or simply a manifestation of his own guilt and desperation. He seeks guidance from the pastor of a more traditional church, who urges him to trust in God's plan and not try to control everything.
At the same time, Crystal is struggling with her own demons, including a drinking problem and a secret affair with Pernell's best friend and fellow judge, Consociate (portrayed by Andre Royo). She attends an AA meeting and meets a man named Gonzo (portrayed by Garret Dillahunt), who seems to be genuinely interested in helping her.
The episode ends with several cliffhangers, including Pernell confronting Curtis in his church and Jocelyn discovering a shocking piece of evidence in her case. Overall, "He So Loved" is a tense and thought-provoking installment that delves deeper into the themes of faith, justice, and corruption that drive the series.
