Hairspray Live! is a television musical spectacle that premiered on NBC in December 2016. The show is based on the original award-winning Broadway musical and the 2007 movie adaptation of the same name. This production was a collaboration between Universal Television, Zadan/Meron Productions, and Sony Pictures Television. The show features an ensemble cast of talented actors, singers, and dancers, including Dove Cameron, Martin Short, Kristin Chenoweth, Harvey Fierstein, Jennifer Hudson, and Ariana Grande.
The show takes us back to the 1960s in Baltimore, where big hair and big dreams collide in a world of music, dance, and social change. Tracy Turnblad (played by Maddie Baillio), a spunky teenager with a heart of gold, dreams of being a dancer on "The Corny Collins Show," a popular local TV program that showcases the latest dance craze, "The Madison." Despite being ridiculed and bullied for her weight, Tracy's determination and talent earn her a spot on the show. She soon becomes a beloved star and an inspiration to those who are different and marginalized, including her best friend Penny Pingleton (Cameron).
However, not everything is fun and games in Baltimore. There is still rampant racism and segregation, as evidenced by the near-apartheid in the city's schools and the exclusion of African Americans from the "white" TV station. Tracy's activism and empathy lead her to join a movement advocating for equality and integration. Her efforts put her at odds with the show's egocentric host, Corny Collins (Derek Hough), and his scheming producer, Velma Von Tussle (Chenoweth), who believe in maintaining the status quo. Tracy also falls in love with a shy and charming black dancer, Seaweed Stubbs (Ephraim Sykes), which further challenges societal norms and prejudices.
The show is a feast for the senses, with dazzling choreography, catchy songs, and colorful costumes. The musical numbers range from upbeat and energetic, like "You Can't Stop the Beat" and "Welcome to the 60s," to emotional and poignant, such as "I Know Where I've Been" and "Without Love." Each actor brings a unique flavor to their character, with Fierstein channeling his inner Edna Turnblad, the boisterous and loving mother of Tracy, Short embodying the eccentric and hilarious Wilbur Turnblad, and Grande showcasing her powerful vocals as the ambitious and vain teen queen, Amber Von Tussle.
The show also takes advantage of its live format, with occasional moments of improvisation and audience interaction. During the commercial breaks, viewers were treated to behind-the-scenes footage, interviews, and sneak peeks of the next segment. The show's producers also included a tribute to their late collaborator, Craig Zadan, who passed away before the show's broadcast. The tribute featured a montage of Zadan's past productions, as well as a special performance by Chenoweth of "For Good" from Wicked, which Zadan produced on Broadway and TV.
Overall, Hairspray Live! is a joyous and timely celebration of diversity, inclusivity, and optimism. The show's themes of acceptance and resilience resonate strongly in today's world, where hatred and intolerance still prevail. The cast and crew's passion and talent shine through every scene, making it a must-watch for any fan of musicals or social justice. As Tracy herself sings in the show's finale, "You can't stop today as it comes speeding down the track. Child, yesterday is history, and it's never coming back."
